Royal Southern Brotherhood -- Don't Look Back

There's a gracious quote in the promo video by none other than Mr. John Hiatt. DeucE turned me on to Hiatt (among others) back in the day riding down Old Metairie Road if memory serves. Hearing that stuff makes me wish we could go back some days. On the other hand, Hiatt offered the brilliant line that he "never looked forward to looking back." Seems to fit RSB's latest effort recorded in Muscle Shoals no less...

Jackson Station -- Band Of Heathens

Just something about going to the Station early on a cool morn...

B.B. King -- Rock Me Baby

RIP, great one. The King is dead, long live the King...

Robert Cray -- Second To None On This Day

Our final act of Jazz Fest Saturday was none other than Mr. Cray. Second row seats no less. Right before the show, Sean mentioned that he might slip out early to catch a bit of Ryan Adams. I offered that Evan and I might do the same and catch the end of the Who's show. The ladies in our group opted to stay put to see the handsome one. Once the show started, we didn't think twice. No one was going anywhere. Cleanest guitar work I have ever heard... Can I get a witness?

Sonny Landreth -- Next Up

The real reason for this year's Jazz Fest Journey - two of my favorites back-to-back starting with a taste of Louisiana slide. Evan and Sean paid close attention to Sonny's every move, like many of the young guitarists in the audience. If you allow yourself to look away and look around for just a minute, you see it in their eyes. Respect in a word...

Vieux Farka Toure -- At The Blues Tent

After the Joe Krown Trio, Sean introduced us to the amazing guitar work of Vieux Farka Toure, take a look for yourself...

John Lisi & Delta Funk -- Better Late Than Never

Get to take a little time out to post my NOLA Jazzfest recap finally! We hit the Blues Tent straight away and landed second row seats one through five (left side 'cause that's where Sonny Landreth stands when he performs). First up, a talented guitarist and singer by the name of John Lisi. During his set, he played the intro to Stairway to Heaven because as he put it he wanted to be the first to do so on the second day of the festival, too funny. Band was super tight and his backup singer has an amazing voice, so powerful I noticed her standing off the mike yet still belting it out with ease. Spoke to him briefly after the show and congratulated him and his band on nailing it. Let him know that I look forward to seeing him again. Just something about a fest bringing out the best in the local talent regardless of where...
